The former champion’s son Campbell has shared an emotional tribute via his first public comments after his father’s death.
Tributes have poured in from across the sports world and beyond in the wake of the tragic news of the one-time world welterweight titleholder, who passed away at his property on Sunday morning at the age of mid-forties.
“There are no words to describe how I feel,” captioned his son beneath a series of personal images.
“People always said I looked like your spitting image – never a more accurate word spoken. I admired you in each way of life.”
He continued: “There’s no way to put into words how much I’m going to cherish the good times we shared and each of the special memories, that I will treasure always. Just can’t accept we will never have any more. I love you, Dad.”
Area police stated that the sports star had been pronounced at his home based in Hyde. They stated that there were not any concerning circumstances involved in the incident.
In a path similar to his dad, Campbell too ventured into a career in boxing, making his professional introductory fight in 2021. He later stepped away from the sport not long ago.
On Monday, the loved ones of the athlete shared a statement stating that they were “deeply moved” by the generous wave of support and kindness sent their way.
“Our loved one was far greater than a world champion. To us, he was simply ‘Richard,’ our son. A loving dad, grandfather, and family member, and a loyal companion to countless people,” the release said.
“He had a spirit as generous as his smile, and his generosity, wit, and loyalty impacted everyone fortunate enough to know him.
“To the rest of the world, he will permanently be known as one of fighting’s greatest champions – a person who put his all during the fights and wore his heart on his sleeve.”
